It's important to note that two types of PayPal transactions exist: PayPal Account and PayPal Credit Card.

• PayPal Account is the way most individuals choose to use PayPal. In order for these transactions to work, both the buyer and the seller must have PayPal Accounts. When prompted to begin payment, the buyer is redirected to the PayPal website to log into their account and complete the transaction by accepting the charges. This type will usually be used by Method only for portals, since the customer is required to log in to pay. People with a PayPal Payments Standard or PayPal Payments Pro account can take advantage of this transaction type.

• PayPal Credit Card is much more akin to a normal merchant account experience on the user end. Much like PSIGate, Authorize.net, or Intuit Merchant Services, the buyer enters their credit card information on the Method screen and processes the payment right there without dealing directly with PayPal at all. This is the payment type we will be using in regular payment screens and portals alike. Only people with a PayPal Payments Pro account can take advantage of this type.

Setting up a PayPal Account Payment Gateway[top]

These steps will outline how to get your PayPal Account Payment Gateway up and running within Method. It's important to note that certain steps are different for non-U.S. businesses: these steps will be clearly marked, so keep that in mind if you're not operating within the U.S.

1. You will need to ensure you are signed up for either a PayPal Payments Standard or PayPal Payments Pro business account. If you are using a personal account, you will have to upgrade to a business account. You can sign up or upgrade by visiting this website.
   
   
   In Canada, business accounts are referred to as Website Payments Standard and Website Payments Pro, respectively. Non-U.S. residents can sign up or upgrade by Googling PayPal and clicking on the Sign Up link.
2. You will also need to ensure you have established your API credentials. The steps to do so are outlined by PayPal at this website.
   
   
   Please note that Method CRM uses the Signature credential set, NOT the Certificate credential set. Ensure that you choose the Signature credential set option when establishing your API credentials.
3. Once you have completed the above two steps, log into your Method account and go to Customize > My Account > Payment Gateways (view/edit) > Add New Payment Gateway.
   
   
4. From the drop down menu, click PayPal Account and fill in your API credentials as they were generated in step 2.
   
   
5. Test out the settings using your Method payment screen. This requires you to do a live payment test. Here are the steps involved:
   
   
   1. Go to Customers > Invoice and create a basic invoice with a small dollar amount attached (e.g. $1.00). Save the invoice.
   2. Go to Customers > Receive payment and click on the Received from drop down menu. Select the customer for whom you created the test invoice.
   3. From the Payment gateway drop down menu, select PayPal Account and Save the payment.
   4. Then, go to your PayPal Merchant Account and check to see that the payment was processed.
   If you have already customized your payment screen, you will need to do some additional work in order to set up your PayPal gateway. The new screens we are pushing out have the PayPal informational already included in them. You will have to make a copy of the new screen and then reapply your existing customizations in order for everything to work together.
6. And you're done! Congratulations, your Method account will now accept PayPal Account payments!
